The natural reaction when your pony bolts is to haul in and grind him to a halt. You get uptight, you yank at the reins like you would like to pull his head off and all you achieve is to enhance your possibilities of getting thrown off. The more that you tense up, the less you achieve. Your best bet is to simply focus on staying in the saddle and letting your pony run himself to a stop while increasing that process. Rather sadly, panic is the instant response of riders when their horses bolt.
